TJ Clark
TJ Clark
TJ Clark is widely recognised as one of the world’s most distinguished art historians. A teacher for many years at universities including Berkely and Harvard, he is a regular contributor to the London Review of Books.
In his latest influential work, These Passions: On Art and Politics, Clark asks: is art obliged to engage with politics? If so, how? He unpicks the nature of capitalist society and its visual culture. He tries to understand the politics of appearance — the twists and turns of consumerism, the arrival of the 24-hour image-world and the ongoing saturation of life by pictures and ‘data’. Written over the course of twenty-five years, these radical, provocative essays rethink issues central to art-making and political life today.
Clark's usual platforms are at the national galleries of the world and hallowed institutions of learning. The opportunity to hear him at Mannington is a rare treat indeed.
This event will run from 3:00pm to 4:00pm with a signing taking place afterwards.
