Part 2: Musical Deconstruction - Advanced Performance Course

Part 2 of our Musical Deconstruction Advanced Course culminates in a performance showcase for friends and family at the Ralli Hall Theatre in Hove.

The Deconstruction is a long-form format that explores a recurring relationship-based scene through themes, commentary and the world in which it all takes place. Developed by Del Close and The Family – a seminal improv group from Chicago that included the likes of Miles Stroth and Matt Besser.

This course will explore the shape of Deconstruction with the addition of musical improv, using songs to bring out the rich themes created. Like most forms, the focus and way it is taught evolves over time, and so we’ll use the original form as inspiration and find variation according to the class.

What can I expect?

• Detailed relationship scenes with emotional songs
• Identifying theme and exploring that through scene work and lyrics
• Short, funny premise-based and game-heavy scenes and musical pieces
• Exploring and developing variations of the form

Who is this course suitable for?

• Improvisers with both musical improv and long-form experience
• Advanced improvisers (at least 3 years+) For improvisers who are regularly rehearsing and performing with a team.
• To join us for Part Two, Part One of Musical Deconstruction does not have to be completed if you have experience with both musical Improvisation and longform improvisation and/or improvised scene work. If you're unsure, pop us an email at mayday@themaydays.co.uk.

If we have to cancel the event due to low numbers, we will do this with 24 hours notice (and you will receive a warning 48 hours before the course if this looks likely).

When: Wednesday nights for 6-weeks, from 7th June to 12th July, 7-9.30 pm each week, the performance showcase for friends and family will run in week 6 on Wednesday 12th July at the Ralli Hall Theatre in Hove, doors 7.15 pm, you'll need to be available from 6/6.30pm for a warm-up before showtime!

This course has two Maydays facilitators and an extra evening for the performance showcase, so is slightly higher in cost than our other 2.5-hour 6-week courses.
