Intro to The Harold Performance Course culminates in a performance showcase for friends and family at the Ralli Hall Theatre in Hove.
Improv games are great, and so are scenes. They are fun and funny. They teach you a little about yourself and maybe even a little about life. But how can we link them together to make a show? How can we be inspired without being restricted? How can a group become a team and then make something extraordinary together?
Something that changes each time, but has a structure that holds it together?A classic improv format that was created in the 1980’s, the Harold is a fascinating, flexible way to make an improv show. It is composed of sets of three scenes, group games and the infamous ‘opening’. Rather than being tied to a single story, characters and scenes can cross-pollinate and inspire each other. The backbone of improv training at many famous improv theatres including iO and the UCB, you can learn it in a few weeks and still be performing it twenty years later.
Taught by self-confessed Harold fanatic Jules Munns, this course will unpack and share the mysteries of the form. No previous knowledge of the form is necessary. Once you start to learn, you’ll be seeing it everywhere anyway.
What can I expect?
- Builidng on the introduction to the classic ‘Harold’ Structure - openings, streams, beats and games (don’t worry - that’s all the jargon!)
- How the Harold is welcoming to all players - a balance of the comic, the heartfelt and the weird
- How connections can be made - A close examination of how scenes can inspire each other and themes can arise without effort
- Being yourself among others - How to work in a group without losing individuality
- Staring in a performance showcase for friends and family
Who is this course suitable for?
- Adults 18-100
- Improvisers with 1 year+ of experience
- Improvisers who have Harold experience and want to move onto a performance level
