Getting to Grips with Kleinian Concepts: Balancing on a tightrope of mania - a precarious normality 

This event continues our exploration of Kleinian thinking with a focus on different aspects of child psychoanalysis. 

Judith Jackson will explore how certain manic defensive organisations can be used to sustain a very fragile sense of self and enable a potentially psychotic eruption to remain intact. She will bring her experience of an analysis of a nine-year-old girl to examine the ways in which she tries to master persecutory anxieties and potential fragmentation, in order to hold herself together. 
In her paper, Judith will aim to show how the girl tries to convince herself and others that she can function like an ordinary normal child when psychically she is all the time balancing precariously (as the title suggests) on a tightrope of mania. 
Judith will also highlight some of the technical problems that challenged her when working with such a patient. This paper with some minor modifications is published in The Kleinian Tradition, edited by Penelope Garvey (Karnac, 2018). 

There will be a discussant (to be confirmed) and the event will be chaired by Francesca Hume. 

All registered attendees will receive a link to the recording following the live event once it has been edited which will be valid for two weeks following the event. These events will be in English

Judith Jackson is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society. She is both a child and adult psychoanalyst and trained as a child psychotherapist at the Tavistock.
