Authors in Conversation: John Steiner discusses his new book, Explorations of Mourning in Psychoanalysis and Literature

We are delighted to mark the publication of John Steiner’s new book, Explorations of Mourning in Psychoanalysis and Literature: Turning Ghosts into Ancestors, with this online event. 
John will be in conversation with Michael Feldman, Daniel Pick and Heinz Weiss.

About the book 
Losses are met throughout life and are either accepted and mourned or resented and denied. Sometimes mourning is inappropriate or premature because losses can be prevented, and unfinished business needs to be completed. Eventually, however, accepting and mourning the loss confers enormous benefits, many of which arise from the development of symbolic thinking that enables ghosts to be turned into ancestors. 
These themes are explored in clinical material and in extracts from literature. They enable some of the ideas of Freud, Klein, and Bion to be expanded and updated. The book ends with an edited transcript of interviews discussing the author’s personalhistory in relation to his work.
With insights from across the author’s distinguished psychoanalytic career and a deep understanding of literature, this is key reading for all psychoanalysts, and anyone who wants to understand loss.

About the discussants
John Steiner is a Distinguished Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and a former Trustee of the Melanie Klein Trust. He is author of many key papers and books on the theory of ‘psychic retreats’ and other themes such as shame, psychotic and borderline states, and illusion and disillusionment. He is a Sigourney Award recipient. 

Michael Feldman is a training and supervising analyst, a Distinguished Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and a former Chair of the Melanie Klein Trust. He is highly regarded for his contribution to psychoanalytic theory and his keen clinical insight. A selection of his papers, Doubt, Conviction and the Analytic Process, was published in 2009.

Daniel Pick is a training analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society and Professor of History at Birkbeck, University of London. He writes on history, politics and culture through a psychoanalytic lens and his publications include Psychoanalysis: A Very Short Introduction  - an account of the ‘talking cure’ and its history.

einz Weiss is a training and supervising psychoanalyst and member of the German Psychoanalytical Association, and a guest member of the British Psychoanalytical Society. He is currently Chair of the Education Section of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and he has written many books and papers in English and German, most recently Trauma Guilt and Reparation (Routledge, 2020).
