On this, the fifty-year anniversary of sculptor and performance artist Joseph Beuys lecturing at the former Belfast School of Art, Robert McDowell returns to the city for a talk and discussion on his work and the legacy he left behind.
McDowell founded the inter-disciplinary Troubled Image Group of artists (TIG) in 70’s Belfast. From it came Art & Research Exchange (ARE) and other groups up to and including Bbeyond.
It included the Irish members of the Free International University founded by Joseph Beuys and Heinrich Boll. TIG presented complex often surreal truths to belie or satirise stereotyping by news media or propaganda such as that of sectarian muralists.
Director and founder of Summerhall Edinburgh, he has studied at Belfast, Slade, and Hamburg Art Schools & Cambridge University, and worked over 10 years with Beuys and 40 with Ricky Demarco.
