Discover the Art of Bookbinding and Boost Your Practical Numeracy Skills!

We will be joined by renowned bookbinder Hannah Brown for a hands-on, creative journey into the basics of bookbinding. Over the course of three engaging evening classes, you’ll master three timeless bookbinding techniques while gaining the skills and confidence to craft beautiful, functional books at home.

Perfect for beginners or those with a curiosity for handmade crafts, this course blends creativity with practical skills, making it a rewarding experience for all.

What You’ll Create:
During the course, you’ll learn to construct three unique book styles, each with its own charm and purpose:

- Pamphlet Binding
- Concertina Binding
- Long Stitch Binding

Using a delightful selection of coloured and patterned papers alongside bookcloth, you’ll make stunning books to cherish or gift.

Skills You’ll Gain:
With expert guidance from Hannah, you’ll develop key bookbinding and practical maths skills, including:

- Measuring and cutting materials accurately
- Understanding angles and folds for precision
- Calculating dimensions to ensure neat, functional books
- Assembling and stitching bindings securely
- Exploring design choices to personalize your creations

These skills are not only essential for bookbinding but also a great way to enhance your numeracy and attention to detail.

All tools and materials are provided — just bring your enthusiasm and creativity!

This workshop is funded by Somerset Skills & Learning: Multiply to support adult learning, incorporating maths and numeracy. To qualify for a funded place you need to be aged over 19 and live in Somerset. The course is designed for those wanting to gain practical craft and numeracy skills, particularly for those who do not have or are not currently working to GCSE level maths*.

*This workshop is subsidised by Multiply: Somerset Skills & Learning to support maths, numeracy and adult learning and is free for adults in Somerset. To qualify for a funded place you need to be aged over 19 and live in Somerset and register an account with SS&L through the link given to you once you have purchased your ticket. If you are not based in Somerset (e.g. North Somerset, BANES, Dorset) but would like to take part please contact us first before booking so we can ensure the cost of your place is covered. The Old Stores Studio Cancellation Policy: Please note if you find yourself unable to attend your booking I'm afraid we are unable to offer a refund but you can transfer your ticket to another person in advance. Please let us know if you wish to do this. If the studio cancels your booking for any reason we will do our best to reschedule the workshop on an alternative date, transfer your credit to another workshop or if that is not possible we can issue a full refund upon request.
