PEX 100: A Place to Belong

Join us at Copeland Gallery as we mark 100 years since the Peckham Experiment began in 1926.

The Peckham Experiment was a radical study of health and community, begun in Peckham by Drs Innes Hope Pearse and George Scott Williamson. At its heart was a question that still resonates today: what does it mean to be truly healthy?

Our centenary exhibition brings together archive material, films, oral histories and contemporary creative work to explore the people, ideas and everyday life of the Experiment, and what its thinking around health, community, creativity, freedom and place might mean today.

Across the exhibition, historic photographs, documents and moving image sit alongside newly commissioned and invited works by contemporary artists and creatives. Stories from former members and voices from Peckham today connect the original Experiment with the neighbourhood and communities around us 100 years later.

The Peckham Experiment CIC is a resident-led organisation based at the Pioneer Building. We preserve, share and explore the Peckham Experiment through storytelling, events and creative collaborations. We invite people to discover this remarkable history and use it as a starting point for new conversations about health, community, creativity and place.
