Once a year, every year, Imogen has her birthday. And every day, every year, Imogen is haunted. At 25 she thought she’d killed it. Tonight she learns she was wrong.

A fictional story loosely inspired by Mark Fisher’s groundbreaking nonfiction book Capitalist Realism, Imogen Dutt is about what happens when your imagination gives up the ghost.

Somewhere in the past, a teenager climbs out her window to meet something that claims to be her boyfriend. Today, after a month without having opened the front door, an adult realizes she can no longer picture life outside that relationship. So she goes out to celebrate her birthday, reckoning with why it’s so hard to think of alternatives, and followed by a creature with an impossible face.
