Can you make your own life into a compelling memoir? Award-winning writer Jo Bell is in town to read from her own memoir, Boater (on Friday evening, at Kemp's). She briefly takes over the Cook's Place for a thought-provoking and enjoyable morning of discussion and writing. This session is designed for new and emerging writers ready to begin their own memoir.

We'll ask a few questions about your own story. Where does it really begin, and why does it matter just now? Is truth the same as accuracy? Who might be hurt by your account - and who might be saved by it?

Through guided exercises and discussion, we’ll explore what makes a vivid opening, what research you might undertake, what structures are available to you (including recipes/ bus routes/ songs?) and how to avoid the 'and then...and then.... and then...' structure that makes for a dull narrative. You'll begin to catch hold of the thread of story that turns a lived experience into a lively read.

Expect honest reflection, practical tools and the freedom to make imperfect notes. You'll leave with a clearer sense of where to start - and some tools to help you continue.
