Online Workshop: Writing poems inspired by James Schuyler and Barbara Guest with Pam Thompson
Tue 25 Feb 2025 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM GMT
Online, Zoom
Description
'Outside on the Inside':
Writing poems inspired by the work of New York School poets, James Schuyler and Barbara Guest.
James Schuyler and Barbara Guest were very much part of the New York School of poets in the 1950s and 196O and yet, for certain reasons, and at the same time, might be considered 'outsiders'; not as well-known (though certainly well-regarded) as Frank O' Hara, John Ashbery and Kenneth Koch. All this against a backdrop of Abstract Expressionist art..
In this workshop we will read and discuss a sample of poems from each poet and extracts from some of their other writings considering what makes them 'outliers' and what contributes to their distinctive excellence. There will be writing prompts relating to the poems and a consideration too of the intersections poetry and art.
The aim is to have several starts of poems you can return to with a focus on two poets who you may not know, know a little about, or who you may know very well indeed.
The workshop is suitable for all levels of experience.
