At this event we will discuss the following topics:
- How we address the current crisis of confidence and trust in Policing?
- Whether our systems of Police oversight and accountability are sufficiently robust?
- How we balance the tensions between accountability and lessons learnt?
- How we can both be fair to officers and to complainants?
- Sal will also answering some hot topic questions about what the future of Policing looks like.

Biography:
A recognised Policing Accountability Expert and Inclusive Culture Expert, Sal was the first South Asian and Muslim to hold the post of Regional Director for London at the Independent Office for Police Conduct. He was one of the most senior visible Muslims to have worked in the Civil Service.
Winner of the national Equality Diversity and Inclusion Award from the FDA Union 2023 in recognition of his tangible work focused on ED&I and driving change in Policing at a regional and national level, Sal is currently an Assistant Director in the largest local authority in Europe, working to tackle the inequalities facing citizens across Birmingham.
Featured as one of the top 100 most influential Muslims in the UK by Equality X and in the top 10 influential Muslims working in the Police and Fire Services.
Sal has worked passionately to drive change in policing in London and nationally as the Strategic Lead on Discrimination. Focussed on stop & search, racism, misogyny, police culture and centring diversity, equity and inclusion in the national conversation. Became a nationally regarded voice in this area utilising his lived experience to help tackle the difficult issues around racial discrimination and working with others in searching for solutions.
Sal is an expert in building inclusive cultures and is currently supporting the National Fire Service in tackling their challenges around institutional racism and misogyny. He is also a passionate advocate of male allyship.
Sal’s voice has reached millions of people through his extensive experience of speaking to the media on a regional, national, and international stage. Sal has spoken on the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Al-Jazeera and been featured in publications such as the Guardian, the Independent, the Telegraph, the Times, Arab News, and the New York Times to name just a few. He is also a nationally regarded inspirational public speaker, skilled at engaging different audiences on the difficult issues, with emotional connection.
Nominated for the Diversity Power List 2023/24, the National Diversity Awards 2022 in the category of positive role model for race, religion, and faith. Shortlisted for the 2022 Asian Achiever Awards in the Uniformed/Civil Service category.
