Jacken Elswyth, Elspeth Anne, Bushelbag Carollers
Mon 24 Apr 2023 7:00 PM - 9:45 PM BST
Prince Albert, Stroud, GL5 3SS
Description
Delighted to welcome Jacken back after their superb support slot for Nick Hart in 2022.
Jacken Elswyth is a London-based folk musician, banjo player, and instrument builder. She is focused on exploring traditional tunes, developing extrapolations on folk styles and techniques, and investigating drone, ambience, and improvisation within and beyond traditional music.
She organises the Betwixt & Between tape series as one avenue of these investigations, and plays dark drone folk with Shovel Dance Collective, free folk with Sullow, and freely improvised music in other contexts.
Here she presents pieces for solo banjo with drones, taken from Banjo with the Sound of its Own Making ("foregrounds the talents of one of the instrument’s most exciting young practitioners and makers"- The Guardian) and Six Static Scenes ("beautiful and raw, augmented by scratches, tension and twang" - The Guardian; "an exercise in controlled chaos and hectic minimalism, a modernist interpretation of an antiquated form" - Folk Radio).
Elspeth Anne will be joining as support
Elspeth is a queer singer-songwriter weaving traditional folk, alt country and punk influences into a mesmerising dark folk sound. She plays a mix of original and traditional songs accompanied by guitar and drones. Currently based on the Welsh Borders, Elspeth has been performing regularly in the UK and Europe as a solo artist and locally as part of Morris side Blackthorn. Elspeth's work has been championed in the past year by artist and folk researcher Ben Edge and Lankums Ian Lynch on his podcast Fire Draw Near.
She will be performing her recently released third album, Mercy Me, which has received highly favourable reviews from the Guardian, Folk Radio UK and Trad Folk, with Folk Radio describing it as “an album full of ideas, but more importantly, full of feeling, a raw, moving triumph.”
Please buy tickets in advance for this inclusive night of explorative folk for all.
