Dr Claudine Matthews has developed this course to provide tailored diet and nutrition education and guidance to both Transfusion and Non-Transfusion Dependent Thalassaemia patients experiencing a myriad of disease and clinical related nutritional problems.

Dr Claudine Matthews is a Consultant Dietitian for Health and Social Care and is a driving force for having nutrition incorporated into general healthcare management for individuals with haemoglobinopathies. She has recently spoken in the houses of parliament on the subject and is the leading expert in this area.  

Note: this course is a series of workshops and full benefit to participants will come from attending all 4 sessions. Each workshop's duration is 1.5hrs, with a total of 4 workshops all being held on Wednesday evenings (dates below).

Session 1 (21/2/24): Iron, Iron Overloading and malnutrition
Severe anaemia
Iron chelation and impact on nutrition
Malnutrition (including faltering growth)
Nutrition support

Session 2 (13/3/24): Endocrine problems

Hormone Imbalances
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
Pre diabetes/Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
Hypothyroidism

Session 3 (17/4/24): Osteoporosis, Bone Health and Immunity

Low Ca and bone density
Immunity (splenectomised patients)
Hypo and hypertension
Heart disease

Session 4 (1/5/24): Major organs and GIT
Gallstones
Kidney stones
Fatty Liver/Liver failure/Cirrhosis
Acid Reflux
