Tuck bold African prints into a grooved panel to make wall art. Japanese kinusaiga, no sewing, no needle, no perfection.
A SHIFT HAPPENS Workshop hosted by The Restoration Refugee
It looks like a quilt, hangs like a painting, and doesn't take a single stitch.
Kinusaiga (key-new-sigh-ga) is a modern Japanese art form born from recycled silk kimonos. You tuck fabric scraps into grooves cut into a foam panel, piece by piece, until a picture appears. We're taking Japan to the African diaspora with bold and bright African prints. The result looks like it took a week. It took a couple hours.
Come as you are: a little frazzled, a little curious, zero crafting experience. The tucking is quiet, repetitive, and weirdly addictive. Your hands stay busy while your mind gets a break.
What we'll do
- Learn the tuck: how to work your template and layer pattern on pattern
- Watch your design come alive, one groove at a time
You'll leave with
- Your own kinusaiga art piece, ready to display
- A new skill you'll want to come back to
No art experience needed. Imperfection encouraged.
