Tuning into Birdsong - Dawn Chorus Immersion

Sun 27 Apr 2025 5:15 AM - 6:45 AM BST Brownsham Woods

Birdsong is so delicious, and studies tell us that it can also help us relax while we concentrate and generally enhance our wellbeing. The use of recordings of birds singing has floated along the corridors of Alder Hey Children’s hospital as a kind of music therapy.  We intuitively know that these natural, beautiful and most varied tunes generally cheer us and do something magical, so what could be better than greeting the soloists and hearing these sounds at their best as the sun rises?

Join Martin Unwin for a walk deep in the dark, quiet woods just before dawn, and then sit, listen and learn about bird calls in Nature’s glorious amphitheatre. You’ll need a torch, warm clothing, a hot flask to enjoy this event with comfort and safety too.  You may also wish to carry your own mat (or a small, very lightweight camping chair) too, but for your safety and ease Martin will be bringing some seating sacks for everyone to sit on at each stop area.

Forest School leader and natural history enthusiast Martin has a wealth of knowledge to share about birds and leads many local groups and clubs. He says that birdsong is not just a declaration of territory and advertisement for a mate. It means so much more to us: “It puts us in tune with the sounds of the woodland. At first you can only hear the whole magic of the entire orchestra. But focus, and you can pick out the individual instruments. The more you listen, the easier it becomes to separate and identify the players. A Great Tit here, a Nuthatch over there, with percussion from a Great Spotted Woodpecker!”

Come and tell us what it means to you, and greet the dawn with shared insights and wisdom from Martin. Meet at 5.15am in the car park at Brownsham Wood to slowly walk down together.

Bring curiosity and weather-appropriate clothing.  Please note that this walk is hilly, has some steps and is uneven in parts, so make sure to wear suitable footwear and be prepared to walk carrying a camping chair.

Please note; since the birds and us humans may not respond well to this event if the weather is bad, in the event of heavy rainfall we may need to postpone it.

We are grateful to David Cossey for the wonderful robin photograph and Mike Faulkner for his lovely wren. If you have any specific questions about the event, please email rowena@resurgence.org

This event is being held in support of The Resurgence Trust, an educational charity (no. 1120414) that seeks to connect people to Nature, to each other and to themselves. For more events from the Trust, head to www.resurgenceevents.org
