“We forget that it is not the wings of the bird that allow for flight, but the bird plus the lifting air.”
In this talk, Sophie Strand asks: “How can we look to fungi and spiderwebs to re-understand cognition as a constantly renegotiated web built by many different environments and species?”
We use ecosystems as mnemonic devices and make conceptual breakthroughs only in physical motion and conversation and in relationship. Yet we think of ourselves as single minds devoted to singular authorship.
Looking to research into extended embodiment, we will weave together our ecological households: the beings – mycorrhizal systems, insects, geological formations, microbes, birds, and animals – that can teach us how to think and tell stories with our wider minds, our extended bodies of relation.
Sophie Strand is a writer based in the Hudson Valley who focuses on the intersection of spirituality, storytelling and ecology. Her poems and essays have appeared in numerous projects and publications, including Emergence Magazine, Lit Hub, Spirituality & Health, Atmos, Braided Way, and ART PAPERS. She is the author of The Flowering Wand, The Madonna Secret and The Body Is a Doorway as well as the creator of the Substack Bestseller Make Me Good Soil.
