Resurgence Talks: Philippe Sands - Ecocide? Issues to Think About

Wed 30 Jun 2021 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM BST Online, Zoom

Please note the new start time is 8pm

Four crimes are covered by international law - genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. Lawyers and barristers around the world are now campaigning to have ecocide - the mass destruction of nature - added to this list of crimes. This would make ecocide an arrestable offence, meaning that individuals and corporations that fund, permit or cause severe environmental harm would be liable to criminal prosecution. This would serve as a major breakthrough for ecological justice and the future of people and planet. Join barrister and author, Philippe Sands as he explores the challenges of this task as well as the sweeping benefits it could have in a time of ecological breakdown and climate crisis.

Philippe Sands, QC is a specialist in international law, Professor of public understanding of law at University College London, and Samuel and Judith Pisar Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. He appears as counsel and advocate before many international courts and tribunals, speaks regularly on the BBC and CNN and contributes to many publications, including the Guardian, Financial Times and New York Times

Philippe is the author of seventeen books on international law. His book East West Street: On the Origins of Genocide and Crimes against Humanity (2016) has been awarded numerous prizes, including the 2016 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. His latest book is The Ratline: Love, Lies and Justice on the Trail of a Nazi Fugitive (2020) about Otto Wächter. He is President of English PEN and on the board of the Hay Festival of Arts and Literature.
