In the west we consider the passing of the year through the prism of four seasons. Other cultures see Nature’s turning quite differently, however. The traditional Japanese calendar recognises the subtle changes of the natural world with a total of 72 microseasons (kō) – inspiration for a new way of connecting with Nature closer to home.

In 72 short chapters, Lev Parikian charts the changes that each of these microseasons brings to his local patch – garden, streets, park and wild cemetery.

Lev Parikian is a writer, conductor and London-dweller. His work as a writer has resulted in four books. He has a short piece of writing in the excellent ‘Red Sixty Seven’ anthology, a fund-raising collaboration between 134 creators that celebrates the 67 British birds on the Red List of conservation concern. He writes for the Guardian’s Country Diary and has reviewed for the Times Literary Supplement and written features for Bird Watching magazine.
