Razan Al Mubarak, president of the IUCN, in conversation with Simon Stuart
As president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Razan Al Mubarak is guiding the organisation into a new era focused on solutions that protect Nature while promoting sustainable development.
Razan has 20 years’ experience in progressive conservation and has headed the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), and Emirates Nature-WWF, an NGO focused on citizen engagement. Under her leadership, EAD became an IUCN Framework Donor, and it has convened four meetings of the IUCN Species Survival Commission since 2008.
Razan also secured EAD’s long-term hosting of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Conservation of Migratory Species secretariats for raptors and dugongs and, in partnership with UNEP, established the Eye on Earth information mapping service to ensure standardised, free and open access to global environmental data.
Simon Stuart is Chief Scientific Adviser at Synchronicity Earth, which he joined in 2017 as Director of Strategic Conservation. In December 2020, he took on the additional role of Executive Director of the conservation organisation A Rocha International. Before joining Synchronicity Earth, Simon served as Chair of the Species Survival Commission (SSC) for the IUCN.
