Resurgence Talk: Helena Norberg-Hodge, 'Why localisation is the path to human wellbeing'
Wed 28 Jun 2023 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM BST
Online, Zoom
Description
Today humanity has a choice between two diametrically opposing paths: on the one hand global economic forces, with the help of algorithms, are pushing for an ever-more competitive, urban, fast-paced technological future; at the same time, from the bottom up, there is a widespread cultural turning towards more cooperative, feminine, community-based, ecological futures. People are recognizing that connection, both to others and to Nature, is the true wellspring of happiness. In almost every country, farmers’ markets, permaculture, community co-ops, local finance and business alliances, place-based education and nature reconnection testify to this great shift in values. In these ways, people are already sowing the seeds for a very different future, and demonstrating the way forward, towards a localised future.
Localisation brings us back to the complex, interdependent web of life that is not only the real economy, but a perpetual source of wonder and fulfilment. It is the key to solving our seemingly endless ecological crises. The antidote to consumer capitalism. A guiding principle to take us back home: to community, to the natural world, and to prosperous, place-based economies. A shift in direction with the potential to change the world.
