Brunch Time Lecture with Professor Rachel Armstrong
Thu 9 Sep 2021 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM BST
Online, Zoom
Description
Join us for the first ever Salters' Institute weekend brunch time lecture series.
Our lectures will bring chemistry and how we interact with it to life, in ways you have never imagined. Chemistry can be found everywhere, from the clothes we wear, to the architecture around us, to inventions that help us live in a more sustainable and eco- friendly way.
Our final guest speaker is Professor Rachel Armstrong.
Rachel Armstrong is Professor of Experimental Architecture at Newcastle University (UK) and visiting professor at KU Leuven (Belgium). She is a Senior TED Fellow with a Fellowship Residency at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Rising Waters II confab (2016).
In this lecture, Rachel will discuss the way matter becomes lively and how this can be applied in the built environment. Transforming building performance through the chemistry of life means the impacts of our living spaces can be similar to that of nature. Rachel will also explore how we may scale up these chemically-creative systems, or “living factories” that link the cycles of living and dying to establish regenerative systems. From bioremediation, to urban retrofit and off-grid forms of living, the future of civilisation without fossil fuel will be discussed including the development of off-planet worlds. This lecture will be followed by the opportunity for the audience to take part in a live Q&A.
Please note, the Zoom link will be sent 24 hours in advance to the start of the lecture. Please check your junk and spam folders if the invitation is not in your inbox. If you have not received the invitation by 8am on the day of the lecture please email publicprogrammes@salters.co.uk.
