Introduction to Podcasting

Do you want to share your research beyond academia? Are you curious about podcasting as a means of public engagement? Are you interested in creating a podcast about your findings, but not sure what it takes and where to start?

The Sociological Review Foundation is hosting an Introduction to Podcasting workshop. Delivered by 'Research Podcasts', this practical and interactive session will be held online and is suitable for all academics - from PhD students to professors - interested in making podcasting work for them. Alice Bloch, the Executive Producer of the Sociological Review Foundation's flagship podcast ‘Uncommon Sense’ will also be present and contributing throughout.

Topics will include: developing your podcast idea, how to record and edit high quality audio, and how to launch and run your podcast to reach your desired audience. The day will be led by Krissie Brighty-Glover, director of training at Research Podcasts, who will unpack the dos and don'ts of academic podcasting using case studies from Research Podcasts’ production network. Uncommon Sense producer Alice Bloch, formerly of shows including BBC Radio 4's 'Thinking Allowed’ and the BBC World Service’s ‘The Forum’, will also be present throughout - and also available for a short follow-up call offered to each participant - and to reflect on what sociologists have to gain from podcasting their research and ideas.

About our facilitators:

Krissie Brighty-Glover: Krissie is the Director of Training at Research Podcasts, who work with researchers and research organisations to help them generate impact through podcasting. Among Research Podcasts' many credits are the innovative co-production ‘Whose Power?’, ‘The Rights Track’ and ‘Thanks for Typing’, which is hosted by the Sociological Review Foundation.

Alice Bloch: Alice is a journalist and producer specialising in the social sciences and humanities, and is the Executive Producer of Uncommon Sense. She worked for many years at BBC Radio 4’s flagship sociology programme ‘Thinking Allowed’ and produced ‘The Forum’ for the BBC World Service. As well as working across BBC radio, she has worked for Penguin Press and written criticism for outlets including the Times Literary Supplement. Her academic background and experience span social and political sciences, cultural studies and social policy. She is also working on her first book.
