New Orleans Jazz Party at Obie's at the Southgate Club 

Thursday 11th December 2025, doors open at 7.45pm till late. Tickets public £16.00, Southgate Club members  £14.00, on the door £18. 

A new Jazz Club is born in North London at the Southgate Club.. This is the launch for regular Jazz nights at the Southgate Club in the new year. Why Jazz at Obie's, Obie's bar is the Club name for the function / event room. This event is promoted by Malcolm Earle Smith, Trombone player &  lecturer at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire in Greenwich. 

New Orleans.. where jazz was born and has been a melting pot for different  styles of music since. Come and help us celebrate some of the great music that has been produced in Crescent City since the early 1900s - Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Dr John, and The Rebirth Brass Band to name a few - and of course New Orlean’s most famous son, Louis Armstrong.Expect a night of infectious rhythm and joyful improvisation!

Malcolm Earle Smith (trombone/vocals)
A highly versatile trombonist and vocalist, Malcolm’s many work credits include Bryan Ferry, John Dankworth,
Martha Reeves, Kenny Baker. As professor of jazz at Trinity Laban Conservatoire since 2007, Malcolm has played
an important role in mentoring the next generation of young British jazz artists.

Tony Kofi (saxophones)
Tony is one of the busiest multi-instrumentalists working in the UK. Twice winner of the BBC Jazz Awards, he has
toured worldwide with artists as diverse as the Gary Crosby’s NuTroop, Courtney Pine, Eddie Henderson, Abdullah
Ibrahim, Julian Joseph and Harry Connick Jnr.

Enrico Tomasso (trumpet)
One of the most popular trumpet players in the UK, Rico started trumpet aged 5 – meeting and playing for Louis
Armstrong on several occasions. Rico has toured widely with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Scott Hamilton, Bucky
Pizzarelli, Bryan Ferry and Clare Teal to name a few. He recently won the best trumpet category in the British Jazz
Awards.

Liam Noble (piano)
A unique and exciting pianist, Liam has worked with Stan Sulzmann, Harry Beckett, Anita Wardell and Bobby
Wellins to name a few . With many recordings under his belt, Liam’s album “Brubeck” achieved strong support
from Dave Brubeck himself. He is also a highly respected educator, teaching at the Royal Academy of Music,
Trinity Laban and the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music

Conor Chaplin (bass)

Conor is one of the most versatile and in-demand jazz bassists in Europe. With a touring schedule that takes him
around the world, Conor has a long list of credits to his name including Jacob Collier, Bobo Stenson, Tom Ollendorff,
Harold Mabern, Billy Cobham , Natalie Williams and Iain Ballamy.

Joe Dessauer (drums)
A superb drummer in both traditional and modern drumming styles, Joe has an increasingly busy schedule. His
credits already include work with major American jazz musicians Ralph Moore and Howard Alden, as well as some
of the best UK jazz musicians, including Anita Wardell, Gareth Lockrane, Simon Woolf and Dave O’Higgins.
