The Spanish Circle: An evening of magnificent Spanish art with Morlin Ellis, Curator of The Spanish Gallery, Bishop Auckland at The Lounge Room, The National Liberal Club
The Spanish Circle is delighted to introduce Morlin Ellis, Curator of the Spanish Gallery in Bishop Auckland, Co Durham, who will enthral us with a presentation on the superb Spanish art collection, together with a brief explanation of The Auckland Project – the regeneration project to which the Gallery belongs.
The Spanish Gallery in Bishop Auckland, Co Durham, is the only Gallery dedicated to Spanish Golden Art in the UK. It forms part of The Auckland Project, which was founded by financier Jonathan Ruffer to create a dynamic visitor destination centred around Auckland Castle, home to the Prince Bishops of Durham. The starting point for the Gallery is the series of life-size paintings of Jacob and his Twelve Sons, by Seville artist, Francisco de Zurbarán. These were acquired in 1756 by Bishop Richard Trevor and have remained in the Castle Dining Room for over 250 years.
The presentation will last for one hour, followed by a complimentary cup of tasty and delicious gluten-free Spanish thick, hot chocolate. There will be a cash bar for those who wish for something else, or something stronger.
This event is dedicated to the memory of our beloved Paul Pickering, a great lover of Spain, its art and a wonderful human being. Paul is dearly missed by everyone who had the honour of knowing him. Requiescat In Pace.
THE CURATOR: Morlin Ellis is curator of the Spanish Gallery in Bishop Auckland. She is a Spanish specialist and former committee member of Artes, the Iberian and Latin American Visual Culture Group (2010-2017; Chair 2015-2017).
