Baduanjin, also known as “The Eight Silk Brocades”, is an ancient Qigong set of eight different fluid movements that together condition the whole body externally — stretching and strengthening it — and internally, improving the function of the organs and systems (respiratory, circulatory, digestive, nervous, etc.).

The set was first described in an eighth-century Taoist text, and it is known to have been used effectively throughout the 17th century during wars in China to alleviate soldiers’ fatigue. This is a key aspect of Qigong, as it helps us to regain energy and vitality to go about our modern daily lives and face our inner battles of stress and emotional challenges.

Baduanjin represents an excellent short daily health routine. It will provide you with a whole-body workout, mobilising all your joints, strengthening your muscles and bones, and improving your posture and balance, while helping to focus and calm your busy mind. Your emotions will also feel more balanced, and your energy levels will increase.

Once you have learnt the set, it will take you just 20 minutes to complete, although the practice can be shorter or longer depending on the number of repetitions. If you persevere in practising the set daily or a few times per week after the course, you will soon notice the health benefits it brings.

The course also includes the essential foundations for effective Qigong practice: breathing techniques, preparatory self-massage, structured joint-opening exercises, and the “three regulations” — body, breath and mind — providing a clear and methodical framework for practising Baduanjin safely and efficiently.
