Robert Returns

In 2009, writer/performer John Crutchfield and producer/director Steven Samuels helped launch an Asheville theater company dedicated to original plays  with Crutchfield's The Songs of Robert, which sold out multiple houses and won a Solo Performance Award at The New York International Fringe Festival. In the fall, these two relaunched their Sublime Theater with Robert Returns, A Journey with Songs, that revisits romantic high schooler and would-be poet Robert a couple of decades on. A successful singer-songwriter who comes home to a small town like Asheville in the wake of the passing of his friend and mentor, Ol' Preacher, Robert encounters long-lost friends and a startling set of circumstances that force him to take stock of his life and the road ahead. No knowledge of the original production required to enjoy this funny, trenchant, music-filled show, in which the remarkable Crutchfield portrays more than a dozen characters, including Robert's guardian angel.

Robert Returns had a successful run at The BeBe Theatre in September 2022 and was remounted so successfully at The Cathedral of All Souls in March 2023 that we decided to give Asheville audiences two more chances to see the show at the wonderful Story Parlor venue in West Asheville.
