University of Hebden Bridge: ASTRONOMY

JOIN US for what promises to be a scintillating introduction to amateur astronomy, presented by Andy Sieroslawski, Observatory Manager at the Astronomy Centre near Todmorden.

During the session, you’ll learn about the night sky, the key instruments used in astronomy and the observation skills required. Andy will guide you through some of the many universal wonders that astronomers regularly see, offer up some practical activities, discuss solar and touch on the future of astronomy.

*About Your Expert Speaker*

Born in West Yorkshire, Andy Sieroslawski attended Cardinal Hinsley Grammar School in Bradford and later studied at Manchester University and Huddersfield University, among others. During his career he has worked as an industrial chemist and media services manager, and lectured in electronics and computing.

In 1992, Andy joined the Astronomy Centre near Todmorden, a major resource for both amateur astronomers and the general public. He is now Observatory Manager.

High up on the moors of the Southern Pennines, at an elevation of about 1,112ft (339m), the observatory is situated on a level plateau, surrounded by a ring of low hills, which offer protection against light pollution from nearby towns.

Individual membership of the Centre is £15 per year and £30 per year for a family membership, which permits the use of the Centre’s equipment as appropriate, unlimited technical and instructional advice, access to the members level of the website, the library and priority entrance to special events.
