Making urban tree planting happen: what we've learned through five years of research

Since 2020, the Trees Outside Woodland project has been looking into ways to increase canopy cover outside of woodland areas. In this free online talk, hear about three areas we have investigated which are already making our urban areas greener, and which you can get involved with to influence planting in your local area: Miyawaki mini forests, tree giveaway schemes and community tree nurseries. Our team of project officers who delivered these pilot schemes will share what they've learned from the project and answer your questions.
- Our research into the effectiveness of Miyawaki planting methods has helped inform the conversation around this exciting way of quickly establishing dense thickets of trees or micro forests.
- Through the project, we mapped and supported a network of community tree nurseries - community groups which come together to plant trees from seed and often provide saplings for local planting projects. Hear how you could get involved - or even set one up yourself.
- In our tree giveaway schemes pilot, our data has shown that asking applicants to contribute towards the cost of their trees leads to better survival rates, research which we hope will allow more of these schemes to be operated across the country, allowing more residents, businesses and landowners to plant more trees in urban areas.
