Group Postnatal Course in Wendover (Buckinghamshire)
I started TVM Postnatal courses back in 2017 after having my son Arthur, because there was nothing else like this around and it was what I felt I would have loved (and really benefited from) as a new mum! We now have postnatal courses starting monthly at our permanent space (TVM HQ) in Wendover and we also have courses specifically designed for second/third time mums! There's tonnes of info below, but drop me a message at sophie@thevillagemidwife.co.uk if you have anu questions!
Times/Locations of sessions: 10am to 12pm at The Village Midwife HQ, HP22 6PE
Sessions per course: 10 x In Person Sessions
The postnatal course primarily gives you the time and space to discuss you and your postnatal recovery and the transition you’re going through – everything else at this time is about your baby, but this is about YOU! We reflect on how you’re doing in a supportive group of other local mums with similar aged babies. Partners are welcome to some of the sessions, but there is no pressure to do so, if you’re back at work.
What's included:
- We have a session with local counsellor Janie Cartledge to discuss postnatal emotions and the transition to becoming a parent, usually a very cathartic session for everyone with a space to share safely
- We also have a slings & carriers session run by Sophie to help everyone feel confident and safe to carry babies in different types of slings/carriers, plus ongoing support with slings throughout the course as your baby grows
- We are joined by Libby, a fab local Sleep Consultant joins us for a session all about babies sleep. We cover how their sleep changes in the first year, plus lots of troubleshooting everyone's concerns and simple strategies to help
- Our very experienced Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, Chrissie Edley joins us to discuss physical postnatal recovery and the stages of this within the first year, returning to exercise plus checks everyone (who wants it) for diastasis recti
- We have a session all about feeding, you can ask questions throughout the course as they come up but this is a dedicated Q&A about all things boob and bottle
- We also have a session with brilliant cranial osteopath Felicity Bertin (from Apple Tree Osteopaths) on baby's reflexes, development and common issues such as reflux and colic (and how to help with these)
- Our fab local nutritionist, Louise Slope talks about postnatal depletion and what to prioritise in your diet in the postnatal period to help with your recovery in the first year after having a baby
- We have a session all about breathwork - using breathing techniques to either help calm or help energeise you, dependent on what you need at the time! This is with Leanne Jeffes, local yoga teacher and breathwork specialist
- Zoe C Photography joins one of our sessions - a brilliant photographer I work with who takes photos of you with your baby. This is especially for all the mums who take fab photos of their partner with the baby, to make sure you get in the picture too!
- We have a session with the lovely Robyn, who has a background in lots of different childcare settings who answers any questions you might have as you approach your child starting in a childcare setting
- We have regular check-ins throughout the course (which is why we space some sessions out to be able to check in as the babies get a bit older) and make sure there is a chance for everyone to reflect on how you’re doing at all stages. Plus, you get ongoing support from Sophie (midwife, founder of TVM and TVM Sling Library, feeding and postnatal specialist, sleep consultant and mum!) with anything you need, in person and on WhatsApp
- We also do some arts and crafts and make canvases of all of the baby's footprints, which is really fun, albeit a bit messy and we also try to take a photo of all of the babies at the start and end of the course to see how they've all grown and changed!
- Socially, although the sessions are a great opportunity for everyone to gel as a group, most mums also meet up between sessions too. The support networks that the courses build are invaluable and very needed!
