The Wirral Viking Festival
The Wirral Viking festival is an immersive, inclusive, family friendly event that celebrates the Norse heritage of the Wirral peninsula.
It aims to give residents & tourists the opportunity to learn about the vast historical significance of the Wirral's’ Norse heritage & history, including its high concentration of Norse place names, including Thing wall, which in Ancient Norse translates to “Assembly Field”, the significance of Thors’ Stone in Thurstaston and the current investigation by Wirral Archaeology CIC underway to determine if there is a Norse Viking ship buried under the car park of The Railway Pub.
- Using a combination of re-enactments, immersive storytelling & educational talks, we will tell the story of the Wirral Vikings who settled here in 902AD as well as offering visitors the opportunity to learn about the Ancient Norse myths and legends told throughout the Norse world through an immersive storytelling experience.
- Use of local historians, ecologists and archaeologists, Including Professor Stephen Harding of Wirral Archaeology & Vanessa Oakden Curator (Regional & community Archaeology) Museum of Liverpool Curatorial as part of educational & historical talks at the event.
- Interactive activities including; live battle re-enactments, immersive storytelling, live music, themed craft, activity & food stalls, and live demonstrations, will make this two-day event a beneficial feature to Wirral's annual calendar of events
Advertised as an inclusive, family event, the Wirral Viking festival aims to be inclusive to everyone including those with extra needs & who require extra assistance, accessibility is at the forefront of the plans for this initiative.
