Comedy writing is a fun way to explore new ideas. Creating a character builds empathy, allowing us to express ourselves in another voice.
With a focus on play, this three-hour writing workshop will use original creative games alongside tried-and-tested building blocks, to create your unique comic character script from scratch.
Joanna Neary is a self-taught writer and character comic with decades of writing and performing experience. Whether you have written anything before or this is brand new to you, this gentle and practical workshop will provide you with the tools to create and develop a fully-rounded comic character script and an option to see it brought to life on stage in the session.
From Redruth, Joanna’s first characters appeared onstage at Pool Comprehensive School and she was hooked. After Falmouth Art College and theatre degree in Brighton, Joanna continued to work in theatre and comedy.
Joanna’s first character comedy show ‘Is Not Feeling Herself’ received a nomination for the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe’s Best Newcomer Show and won Best Female Character Act for Fringe Report. Subsequent shows have been nominated for Best Show at Leicester Comedy Festival and won Best Actress at Brighton Fringe.
Her first TV role was as a drippy singer in Adam Buxton’s The Last Chancers. Joanna has written for Radio 4 (Inner Voices, Wosson Cornwall, The Art Of Now, The Verb), Radio 2 (Out to Lunch) and TV (Paramount special directed by Stewart Lee, Comedy Cuts, E4’s Dog Face, Comedy Shuffle).
