Writing For Radio
Wednesday 11th March, 10 am - 1 pm
"Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin."
Join Tamara Rosenwyn for a quickfire course in creating a compelling radio play.
Unlike film, we cannot rely on costume and visual effects to help tell these stories so we will be looking at how to create a story in the listener’s head that ignites their imagination.
We will be looking at:
- Script Formatting - Radio scripts differ from stage and film scripts. We will compare different examples, explore styles and subgenres.
- Storytelling - Developing strong narratives and plots that take our listener on a journey.
- Language - Exploring how language can be used to develop emotion in the listener and what tools we can employ to grab our listener's attention and maintain a connection with them throughout.
- Sound Effects and Music - Enhancing the listener's experience through sound effects and music and using it to establish a location, convey a genre, theme or emotion.
- Dialogue & Character - Writing realistic dialogue that communicates character, tone and voice. Injecting the story with a character's backstory. Using interior monologue to delve into their innermost thoughts.
- Literary Devices - Can we break the fourth wall? Perhaps we'd like to introduce an unreliable narrator or create humour with a bit of dramatic irony!
Tamara Rosenwyn is a Cornish playwright and creative writing workshop facilitator. For two years, she hosted a community radio show and created a segment called ‘Tell us your story’ where she'd interview Cornish people who had done something wonderfully wacky in their life, narrate it and edit it to music. She has an extended diploma in Creative Media Production, training her in radio plays, audio-recording, editing and distribution. At the University of Brighton, she studied ‘Writing for Radio’ under the tutoring of BBC Writer Julie Everton, creating two original radio comedies. She has edited audio for adverts, educational segments (Coast & Source FM) and been a voice actor in a play on Radio Reverb (Brighton & Hove).
