The Writers Grotto

The Writers Grotto: Where Working Writers Connect.

Mission

The Writers Grotto is a community of working writers and narrative artists who connect in physical and virtual space, pooling our talents to support each other, mentor and teach others, and engage the wider world. The Grotto fosters a literary culture that is generous in spirit and deeply inclusive, elevating writers of all backgrounds.

Vision

The Writers Grotto will expand the audience for meaningful storytelling—from poetry to journalism—and
amplify seldom-heard voices. Our support for daring work will embolden and inspire those within our community and beyond.

Equity and Diversity

As part of its mission to amplify marginalized voices and engage the wider world, the Writers Grotto is committed to enhancing and promoting equity of voice, audience, and opportunity as a way to create a more deeply inclusive literary culture and community. Accordingly, our policies, programs, and other activities should always seek to push back against the inequities we see in the publishing industry, so that we might better support historically underrepresented voices.

About the Writers Grotto:

The Writers Grotto is a workplace — and a place in the mind. We nurture a community of working writers and narrative artists who connect in physical and virtual space, pooling our talents, supporting each other, engaging the wider world, and creating beautiful work.

Founded in 1994, we have a roster of more than one hundred professional writers, including journalists and novelists, podcasters and poets, comedians and filmmakers, playwrights and publishers. Since our founding in 1994, members have written New York Times bestsellers, feature films, and television series, and have won everything from Pushcarts to Pulitzers.

We often host conversations with editors, agents, publicists, and prominent authors. We also invite media professionals to share their skills and expertise with us in special seminars.

We offer an affordable co-working space on Mission Street in San Francisco, and foster a literary culture that is generous in spirit and deeply inclusive. When you connect with The Writers Grotto—whether by taking a class, attending a party, or joining in creative collaboration—you help us amplify seldom-heard voices and expand the audience for meaningful storytelling.

The Writers Grotto is a California 501(c)(3) nonprofit. All donations are tax-exempt to the extent permitted by law.
