Description
Magic Mountain
A celebration of mountain culture and community, inextricably influenced by environment, heritage and Skye's general radgeness. Now in its second year, the event seeks to bring together adventurous souls in a weekend of talks, workshops, music, food and climbing.
Without further ado, I give you the line-up SO FAR......
Brìghde Chaimbeul
Skye-born pipe virtuoso, Brighde has a unique and beautiful style. Bretagne and Far Eastern influence is evident, as well as an archival knowledge of ferocious ancient tunes. Wonderful to behold.
Alan Grieve
Alan is an artist / anthropologist who cuts hair and loves stories. An eclectic knowledge of folk and urban culture, paired with a crafted style of drawing and unparalleled levels of productiveness, makes his vision unique and exciting. His practice - Workspace - epitomises good community art: accessible, culturally rooted, relatable, and funny AF.
Lauren Macallum
Self professed climate gob-sh*te Lauren spends her days shredding what little snow we have left and campaigning for systemic environmental change, in a uniquely Scottish and egalitarian way. She is the managing director of Protect our Winters.
Danny Macaskill
King of wheelies, lover of skids, stunt bicyclist extraordinaire, the Dunvegan daredevil: Skye’s very own Daniel. A bit like if Evel Knievel cut peats.
Calum Maclean
Gaelic poster boy and OG wild swimmer (before the wooly hats and robe things). Calum’s blend of left-field humour, a deep rooted love of Gaelic culture, coupled with a desire to get naked around cold water make him a uniquely Highland hero.
Michelle O’Loughlin
We first learnt of Michelle O’Loughlin through the excellent ‘A Feather in the West’ - a film that truly captures the spirit of adventure climbing as a way of life.
People are well into the idea of being dirtbags, but the reality is hardcore - a fringe lifestyle which epitomises the origin story of rock climbing. Michelle embodies this existence - the real deal - living to climb lots of different stuff, and doing so with grace and joy.
Kirsty Pallas
Mountaineering Instructor, climber, part time roller skater and full time provider of good vibes. Between guiding mountains Kirsty uses her position at Mountaineering Scotland, and her own group - Our shared Outdoors, to make the outdoor industry a more inclusive place with a focus on gender and ethnicity.
Robbie Philips
Climbing serious routes is a serious business but often that makes people who climb them pretty…. serious. Although it would be fair to say that Robbie Philips - one of the most talented climbers this country has seen - approaches projects with the same meticulous mindset as many of his peers, he’s not scared to show his vulnerability. His self produced documentation of the the process provides us a transparency and honesty that is both inspiring and endearing.
Lord of the Isles
Like his MacBrayne namesake, spinner and producer of records Lord of the Isles manages to sound both Scottish and extremely well travelled (musically). House and acid structures are washed with fragments of traditional melodies, resulting in tunes rooted in dark dance floors, filled with mist rather than dry ice.
Mac-Talla Nan Creag
Comprising music mans Lord of the Isles, Hoch Ma Toch and Other Lands. Mac-Talla sound track a trippy Bothy trip. A deep love of mountains and landscape (particularly the far North) is evident in their compositions, along with an inherent idea of what it is to actually live in Scotland.
Peaks
The musical partnership between fiddle player George Smith and cello man Duncan Strachan, one half of the internationally renowned Maxwell String Quartet. The boys last gig on Skye was in the midst of a storm in Coire Lagan. Previous partnerships with the likes of Anna Meredith and Brìghde Chaimbeul give you an idea of the kind of company they keep.
Torque
Nomadic artisan route-setting lads Johnny and Angus will be concocting a complete set of new routes for y’all. By night they'll be swapping tools for tunes and soundtracking a boulder and lead comp with a live set - big moves, big tunes.
Food and drink
Local legends of street food Allan and Jackie from the Hungry Gull will be with us all weekend, dawn tae dusk serving up hot and tasty treats. Expect hearty vegan and veggie fare , perfect to fuel your sends.
A weekend pass gives you all access, including one workshop, which you can book in for once our full line-up is announced very soon!
