About This Event

The Thompson Rivers University Students’ Union is proud to host a professional learning workshop designed for business owners, managers, and staff who want to strengthen their understanding of reconciliation and build meaningful relationships with Indigenous peoples.

This session responds directly to Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action 92, which outlines the responsibilities of the corporate and business sectors in advancing reconciliation. Call 92(iii) emphasizes the need for education and training on the histories and rights of Indigenous peoples, the legacy of residential schools, UNDRIP, and Indigenous–Crown relations.

Through our ReconciliACTION Program, the Equity Committee works to advance these Calls to Action in our region by supporting education, dialogue, and collective action. This workshop provides a practical, accessible opportunity for Kamloops’ business community to take tangible steps toward this work.

About the Training

This 2.5-hour workshop will be facilitated by Bob Watts, Senior Associate with First Peoples Group and a respected Indigenous leader with extensive experience in public policy, reconciliation, and Indigenous governance. Bob previously served as the CEO of the Assembly of First Nations Secretariat and as the Interim Executive Director of the TRC.

Participants will gain:

  • A grounded understanding of the historical and contemporary experiences of Indigenous peoples
  • Clarity on the purpose and impact of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
  • Practical strategies for integrating reconciliation principles into workplace culture
  • Guidance on responding meaningfully to TRC Call to Action 92
  • Tools for building respectful and effective relationships with Indigenous communities

This workshop is suitable for business owners, leadership teams, frontline staff, and anyone working to build more inclusive, informed, and responsible workplaces.

Why This Matters

Reconciliation is increasingly recognized as an essential part of organizational responsibility, community leadership, and effective workplace culture. Businesses that engage with this work thoughtfully are better equipped to serve their communities, uphold strong relationships, and contribute to a future grounded in respect and understanding.

This workshop supports local businesses in taking informed, actionable steps toward this shared responsibility.
