Supporting and Developing Language and Literacy Outdoors

Playing and learning outdoors provide endless opportunities for developing language and literacy skills. Exploring and playing with language from an early age is an essential part of our development and a gateway to further learning. Being able to express ourselves and interact with others increases our confidence and supports good health and well being.

This online session is aimed at anyone working with families and with children at Early Level. 

We will explore

• Realising the Ambition
• Creating stimulating environments
• Encouraging story-telling and story making outdoors
• Simple outdoor activities that encourage language development that you can use immediately

We will provide suggestions for developing spaces and other resources for language and literacy outdoors. We will share examples from our own practice and signpost resources to use as you develop your own practice in your own learning environment.

Our aim is to leave you feeling confident to reflect on the opportunities and challenges in your different contexts and inspired to use the outdoors (whatever that looks like for you) to develop play and learning in language and literacy for all learners.

Participant numbers for these online sessions are deliberately kept small to facilitate discussion. Please come prepared to switch on and use cameras and microphones. 

Carolyn McFarlane leads the session and is the Outdoor and Nature Based Learning Lead at Thrive Outdoors. Carolyn brings 20 years of teaching experience working with children and young people aged 3 -12 and has particular expertise in play and learning outdoors and Learning for Sustainability.
