Thrumpton Hall, Nottinghamshire
A magnificent Jacobean house with a rich history and two acres of glorious landscaped gardens.

A spectacular manor house with close links to the Babington Plot (and a secret staircase with priest’s hole), Thrumpton acquired a grand saloon and spectacular carved staircase during the 17th century. In 1820-30, it was enlarged and beautified by Italianate features, including a lake and bell tower. It sits in complete seclusion in a 300-acre landscaped park with ancient trees, unaltered during the 100-year residence of the poet Byron’s family. Lord Byron’s daughter Ada often visited. Miranda Seymour, novelist and biographer, now lives here and it remains a family home to this day.

Much of Thrumpton’s glory lies in its spectacular two acres of landscaped gardens. The Elizabeth knot garden is hidden away behind a wall of sculpted yews and shaded by a magnolia grandiflora. The front of the house leads out into a formal rose garden, bordered by peonies, lilies and delphiniums. Long vistas of lawn lead out towards a ha-ha.
Tickets £25 including tea, coffee and biscuits and a free signed house guide.
Visitors' views
Welcomed to the house by Miranda Seymour with coffee and biscuits. A most interesting tour followed in which we learned about the connection with Lord Byron and enjoyed visiting all the state rooms.
