Abstract
With students’ roles and agency critical to any higher education teaching and learning space, the question of student belonging undoubtedly holds particular significance. Educators are required to develop a learning environment which cultivates a sense of belonging for all students. Without this, the risk posed by low levels of connectedness between students leads to challenges for meaningful collaboration and social capital development amongst students. Educators therefore need to determine whether their learning strategies enable students to have mutually beneficial relationships and to develop the social capital that is required to meet their learning goals.
One way to foster such a sense of belonging is through the application and implementation of pedagogies of care. Pedagogies of care draw on the ethics of care framework, which emphasises reciprocal educator-student relationships based on mutual respect, authentic dialogues, and investment in knowledge for action. This talk will explore some of the pedagogies of care we can implement in our classrooms to foster a sense of belonging.
