Description
Open LAB
As a way to serve our local dance community, we offer Open LAB to all dance artists as a communal creative workspace. Open LAB is offered by donation - no one turned away for lack of funds. However, space is limited, so we encourage signing up prior to attending...we'd hate to turn anyone away for lack of space!
Come to LAB and #GETWORKDONE !
What Open LAB is...
- Open LAB is a creative, communal space for dance artists to work on their craft...
- Dance Makers – Use Open LAB to noodle around and flesh out choreographic ideas prior to rehearsals, allowing for more efficient use of precious rehearsal time and dancers’ time.
- Dance Teachers – Use Open LAB to plan class materials…no more kicking the coffee table in the living room trying to figure out that “across the floor” phrase.
- Dance Artists – Use Open LAB to work on your own practice - train, stretch, warmup and prep for rehearsal/performance, take time for self-care.
- Open LAB is an open environment that allows for independent work, while also fostering collaboration, sharing, and inquiry. Open LAB encourages discussion and the exchange of ideas.
- Open LAB sessions are usually 2-hours long. Attendees may come and go as they please throughout the session. See below for various times and locations.
What Open LAB is NOT...
- Open LAB is NOT a rehearsal space to set work on dancers. Groups larger than 3 are not permitted.
- Open LAB is NOT a dance class. There is no teacher. Instead, there is a proctor who will check-in attendees and monitor the space to ensure a safe and congenial working environment. The proctor is a dance professional who is also available for feedback and discussion.
LAB Rules...
YES, YES, YES
- Please respect the personal space of others. Open LAB is a communal shared space where everyone is dancing/moving around. Always be aware of your immediate surroundings and space yourself accordingly.
- Please be open to interacting with peers. Open LAB is designed to allow for inquiry and the cross-pollination of ideas. We believe that great creative work is often fostered when ideas are exchanged.
- Please be courteous to other guests, especially with regards to both space and noise. While Open LAB encourages sharing and conversation, please keep voices down or move to the hallway for deeper discussions.
- Please keep an eye on your personal belongings. Open LAB does not have lockers to store your items.
NO-NOs
- Avoid playing audible music/sounds while in the space. If you are working with music/sounds, please use headphones or earbuds. Remember, Open LAB is a shared space.
- While Open LAB encourages sharing, please be respectful of others who may be deep in their work and do not wish to be disturbed. Always, ask if it’s okay to engage another attendee.
- Absolutely no rehearsing of dances in Open LAB. We discourage working in groups larger than 3, as this is a shared studio…no “hogging” of space.
- Food and drink are not permitted in the studio (water in closed container allowed).
