EXPRESSIVE INK PORTRAIT DRAWING FROM LIFE WITH MODEL TRINIDAD
Drawing Portraits that Feel Alive
Live Online Intensive
Wednesday, August 19
2:00–5:00 PM Eastern
What gives a portrait its spark of life?
In this three-hour online workshop we'll explore practical ways of creating portraits with greater personality, presence and emotional connection.
Inspired by the expressive portrait traditions of Frans Hals, Caravaggio and other great painters, we'll work from a live model as they move through a series of changing expressions and subtle states of mind. We will focus on the fleeting moments that make a portrait feel alive.
Working in ink using fountain pen, dip pen, brush pen and simple washes, you'll discover how expressive line, bold value shapes and direct observation can communicate far more than careful rendering alone.
Throughout the afternoon I'll demonstrate my own process while guiding you through a series of increasingly ambitious portrait studies—from quick expressive sketches to longer sustained ink drawings.
By the end of the workshop you'll have new ways of thinking about portraiture, greater confidence working in ink, and practical exercises you can continue exploring long after the workshop ends.
