Welding Bay Safety 101
Multiple dates and times
TinkerMill MakerSpace - Back Bay NW Corner, 80501
Description
This is the prerequisite for learning how to weld in the Welding Bay. WBS 101 is now the first REQUIRED class to take when someone is looking to learn metalworking skills. For those wanting to learn how to weld, you can take MIG 101 after WBS 101.
Anyone can take the welding classes, but if wanting to use the shop and welder you must be a member. You will need a keyFOB to access the power for the welder, and then pay the $10/hr usage fee for welding on your own. Any questions please reach out to the shop captain ronald.dauplaise@tinkermill.org ]
The tools this class will focus on:
- Large Bandsaw with coolant
- Vertical and Horizontal Belt Sanders
- Chop Saw
- Bench Grinder/Wire Wheel
- Handheld Angle Grinder
- Drill Press
What you will learn:
- First Aid, Eye Wash, and Fire Extinguisher Locations
- Tool safety and protocol
- How to safely use and avoid kickback, learning that parts can catch while sanding
- What processes (grinding stone/flap discs/ orbital pads) are necessary to use to smooth down welds.
The creation of this class was to address the lack of information on the tools listed above. Previous to 5/1/24, MIG 101 Intro was just a quick look into the bay, showing the tools and protocol. Now with a separate WBS 101 class, MIG 101 can now fully focus on welding for 3 hours a class and give students more hands on practice with an experienced instructor.
If you have questions about this class you may contact the instructor of this class: ian.flanders@tinkermill.org. Members, please direct message on Slack if you have any questions.
