Woodshop: Basic Bowl Turning

Description
In this class you will use wood shop equipment to create a wood bowl. You will be using hand tools, band saw, drill press, Laguna Lathe and sanders. Carbide turning tools will be used in the class. Carbide tools utilize different techniques than conventional turning gouges and chisels.
No experience required. Safety glasses, face shield hearing protection and dust masks are provided. No loose clothing, jewelry. Long hair tied back and closed toed shoes required. 15+ only (all minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian). You will be using professional level equipment.
Process:
You will lay out a circle on the stock material. Cut the circle to rough dimension on the bandsaw.
Drill a hole for the woodworm screw to mount to the chuck
Turn the outside of the bowl and create mortise to reverse mount the bowl to the chuck. Sand the outside of the bowl.
Reverse the bowl and mount to the chuck to the mortise.
Turn and sand the interior of the bowl.
Apply finish. Depending on the finish, may require time outside of class.
Prerequisites for Certification: In order to continue using the Laguna Lathe after taking the class, Membership is required plus the following classes:

Basic Information:
Turning RPM guideline:
Roughing 6000/diameter=RPM Example: 8” bowl 6000/8”=750 RPM
Finishing 9000/diameter=RPM Example: 8” bowl 9000/8”= 1,125 RPM
Maximum recommended 1000 RPM
Starting guidelines only. Adjust to how the wood reacts to the material removal. Adjust accordingly.
Please note:
- Carbide tools are scrapers and not shearing cutters like conventional gouges.
- Surface finishes are not as clean as conventional gouges requiring more sanding in most cases.
- Carbide tools have disposable edges and are not resharpened like conventional gouges.
- Carbide tools remove material slower in most cases than conventional gouges.
- Carbide tools require less skill to master than conventional gouges.
