Pottery + Ink & Vinyl: Mixed-Media Printmaking Coasters
Clay & Ink: Mixed-Media Printmaking Coasters
Join us for an exciting, fast-paced crossover workshop where pottery meets printmaking! In this action-packed weeknight class, you'll learn to transfer vibrant designs onto clay using three distinct printmaking methods: screenprinting, photopolymer plates, and cyanotypes. We provide the pre-cut clay coasters, pre-setup artwork, and pre-printed transparencies so we can skip the prep and dive straight into the fun. You'll experiment with different textures and colors to walk away with a unique, four-coaster set. Perfect for beginners looking for a high-energy, creative night out!
No prerequisites required. Ages 12+ (all minors require adult supervision).
Note: This class focuses entirely on the surface design and ink transfer process. To maximize our time, coasters are pre-cut and pre-prepped. Coasters will be fired/sealed and ready for pickup at a later date.
Key Characteristics:
- Fast-paced exploration of three distinct printmaking techniques
- Low-pressure, high-reward process using pre-prepared artwork
- Spontaneous variations that celebrate the handmade aesthetic over mechanical precision
- Focus on experimentation and fun without the tedious setup
Techniques Used:
- Screenprinting on Clay: Pulling underglazes or specialized inks through a mesh screen directly onto a transfer surface.
- Photopolymer Plate Relief: Using light-cured relief plates to stamp deep, crisp, textured designs into the clay.
- Cyanotype Printing: Utilizing sun/UV-sensitive chemicals on bisqueware to create stunning, classic Prussian blue photographic transfers.
- Station Rotation: Moving efficiently through dedicated printing stations to maximize creativity in a shorter timeframe.
What We Provide:
- Pre-cut, fresh clay coasters and bisqueware
- Pre-setup artwork and pre-printed transparencies
- Screenprinting screens, underglazes, and squeegees
- Developed photopolymer plates
- Cyanotype chemicals and UV exposure setups
- Clear glazes/sealants for finishing
Outline
Class Day Schedule:
- First 30 Mins: Quick intro, workflow overview, and a fast demo of all three stations.
- Hour 1.0 – 2.0 (Station Rotation - Round 1): Students split into groups. Group A tackles Screenprinting; Group B works on Photopolymer stamping. Simultaneously, everyone preps their Cyanotype coaster with the light-sensitive solution so it can dry.
- Hour 2.0 – 3.0 (Station Rotation - Round 2): Groups swap with different stations.
- Last 30 Mins (The Grand Finale): Everyone exposes their Cyanotype coasters under the UV lamps, washes them out to reveal the brilliant blue.
