Metals 106: Skill Builder 3 Cold Connections
Cold Connections are the secret weapon of all metalsmiths. Great for aspiring metalsmiths without full time torch capability, or newer smiths that want to continue to build their skills. Rivets is where we will be focusing this class, although there are many different types of cold connection. In this class we will cover straight rivets and how to craft them, tube rivets, spacer rivets and capturing, decorative rivets and jump-rings.
You will be able to craft your designed piece after experimenting with each process. The agenda for the class is as follows:
- Introductions and Attendance
- Materials and design discussion, example review
- Demonstrations for the first two processes
- students will sample processes
- Time to cut and prep pieces for first two processes
- Demonstrations for third and fourth process
- Students will sample last two processes
- Time to prep and perform those two processes.
- Final process, reflection discussion, clean up
What to bring:
A lidded water bottle or your choice of beverage (with a lid)
Closed toed shoes
All materials will be provided for you and are included in the price of the class. Each student will have:
- 2x2 copper sheet
- 1x2 brass sheet
- 6 inches of 18g copper wire
- 1 inch of tube (Metal TBD)
- 6 inches of 20g copper wire
- Choice of small stones or metal pieces
If you would rather work in different materials please let your instructor know ahead of time, this does not change or discount the cost of the class.
It may not be possible to complete your design during the allotted class time,our shop offers open studios twice a month from 1-3 pm. Dates will be announced during class.
