Echoes of Greece - an evening of music celebrating Philhellenism, old and new
Tue 15 Oct 2024 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
Benaki Museum, Pireos 138, 118 54 Athens
Description
An evening of music celebrating Philhellenism, old and new. Commemorating the bicentenary of Lord Byron's death and with an introductory talk on his legacy by author Sofka Zinovieff, the evening will present chamber music from Byron's era (Schubert, Beethoven, Mendelssohn) juxtaposed with three pieces by English composer, Tom Smail, including his setting of Beckett's last poem, scored for two voices, cello and narrator, and the world premiere of his cello sonata. Performers include pianist Noam Greenberg, Trio El Greco and a host of the finest Greek musicians. The concert will end with the world premiere of his latest commission: Morias, for large ensemble - a poignant and powerful reflection of Tom's deep connection with the Peloponnese.
