Far-off dreams and homebound roots collide in this heartfelt coming-of-age tale

Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land is set against the backdrop of the Dust Bowl-era prairies and follows the coming-of-age story of Laurie, a young farm girl on the brink of her high school graduation. As she begins to question her future and yearn for a life beyond the boundaries of her rural upbringing, two mysterious strangers arrive in town, stirring local suspicion. Laurie finds herself torn between the pull of new possibilities and the deep-rooted ties to her family and home. The opera’s folk-inspired score evokes the pastoral beauty of farm-life while underscoring the emotional complexity of growing up and seeking one’s place in the world.
