Humans in the Loop

by Lucy Bell and James Joshua Otto

Suitable for ages 12+

A fast and funny new musical in development about the people driving the AI revolution, written by two flesh and bone humans, before the bots take our jobs!

“I was totally mind-blown by the whole experience” – Jenny Eastop (award-winning director of Killing the Cat musical)

AI helpers are embedded in our day-to-day, whether they’re finding us work or running our Tinder. But not many of us know much about the hidden human beings creating and training the technology, and what motivates them to do it.
Performed by a cast of four actor singers, 'Humans in the Loop' is an intensely human new show inspired by a few pressing questions:
What are the long-term ambitions of tech giants? Whose personal info is feeding the machine? Who are the low-paid workers training AI? And what do you get an AI best friend for their birthday?

Performers Sam Otto, Mahalakshmi, Joanne Rogers and Cecily Hadwin have so far tested 40 minutes of the musical’s pop-inspired score at RSA House for London Data Week and at a workshop concert for the Turing Institute. We’ll bring this material and two new additional songs for this special performance at Totnes Fringe. Join us for this milestone on the journey of the show’s development and hang around for a drink to let us know what you think. With thanks to Dr Johanna Walker, Francis Greenacre and Kings Culture
