Black August Writer’s Circle: Archiving Hyper-empathy & Alchemizing Rage as Liberatory Practice
Wed Aug 14, 2024 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM PDT
Online, Zoom
Description
Facilitated by Jaden Fields (he/him) of Mirror Memoirs (link) and Zel Amanzi (they/he/Z) of Transgressive Medicine (link), Black August Writer's Circle is a virtual space for Black folks to practice the transformational power of writing while we explore feelings of empathy and rage in community with each other and while supported by the wisdom of elevated ancestor Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower. No writing experience is necessary!
Archiving and Alchemizing are major ancestral tools of Black people, especially Black queer and TGNC folks, which allow us to:
- know and remember ourselves on our own terms in a world that insists on erasing us
- have a foundation for creativity and expression in a world that attempts to silence us
- communicate with the past and the future in a world that tries to disconnect us from our histories
- gift ourselves to each other and receive each other as gifts in a world that tries to deny our right to love ourselves and each other
Join us for this 2 hour workshop rooted in shared understanding, individual & collective reflection, open expression, Black textual wisdom, and Black love. This is a affinity space for Black people, especially queer, TGNC, neurodivergent and disabled Black folks whose realities Octavia Butler honors.
Allies & Accomplices, sponsor a ticket if you can! Support Jaden and Zel in maintaining the balance between financial accessibility and equitably compensated labor.
