Event Overview

Last year, our International Translation Day gathering centred on the theme Translating Resistance and Truth in Times of Global Crisis. We came together to reflect on the role of translators, interpreters and language workers in resisting oppression and carrying the voices of oppressed and marginalised communities across borders.

Twelve months later, these crises have only deepened. Wars, genocides and systemic injustices continue to silence communities, while millions are displaced. The climate emergency accelerates ecological collapse. And AI technologies increasingly shape the terrain of translation and language work, offering new tools but also introducing new forms of exploitation under authoritarian states and corporate control, further intensifying economic, humanitarian and ecological crises.

In a world of overlapping crises, peace is not the absence of conflict but the continuous labour of building dialogue, democracy, and cooperation, protecting human dignity, and resisting every form of dehumanisation. Truth is not only factual accuracy but also the ethical labour of preserving memory, amplifying silenced voices through translation, and resisting distortion by remaining human.

This year’s theme—Translating Peace and Truth in Times of Global Crisis—asks how translators and interpreters can act as lifelines of communication and co-architects of more peaceful futures. Our speakers—Prof Dr A. Turgay Kurultay (disaster translation and interpreting), Dr Joss Moorkens (AI ethics), and Nancy Piñeiro (ecological resistance)—will discuss how translation and interpreting can be both a witness and resistance to human suffering, and a practice of hope.

Talk: Translators and Interpreters at the Edge: Translating Peace and Truth in Times of Disasters and Crises

Prof Kurultay, a pioneering scholar of translation studies and applied linguistics, has made lasting contributions to community interpreting and translation education in Turkey. His research on relief interpreting paved the way for the establishment of the organisation Afette Rehber Çevirmenlik, ARÇ (Emergency and Disaster Interpreters), a pioneering initiative that trains interpreters to provide vital support during earthquakes, refugees’ movements, and other emergencies.

Kurultay will reflect on the ethical responsibilities of translators and interpreters in moments of disaster, migration, and conflicts —contexts where communication can mean survival. He will discuss why translators and interpreters are not apathetic messengers but agents of dignity, memory, and reconciliation, who convey concern even when silence is enforced.

Talk: Teaching and Ethics in the Age of AI and Translation Technology

Dr Moorkens is a leading scholar on translation technology, precarity, and ethics. Author of more than 70 publications, he examines how machine translation and AI reshape human labour and the value of truth in communication.

His talk will explore whether translation technology teaching can incorporate justice and peace, pushing back against disinformation, inequality, and the erosion of human agency.

Talk: Translating from Below and Within: (Re)production of Knowledge for Socio-Environmental Justice

A technical-scientific translator and interpreter from Argentina, Nancy Piñeiro has worked for over 15 years on socio-political, human rights, and environmental issues, focusing on anti-extractivist struggles in Latin America. Her research explores the role of counterhegemonic translation practices in socio-environmental conflicts.

She will highlight how translation can help communities access relevant information and research, connect local environmental struggles to global movements and disseminate alternatives to "false solutions" in the context of the climate crisis.
